Lower School: Building Strong Foundations
Education is more than instruction—it's orientation. At Meridian Charter School, we help students develop the clarity and confidence to navigate an increasingly complex world. Our Lower School program serves students in grades 6-8, providing a nurturing environment where young adolescents build academic skills, develop social-emotional competencies, and begin discovering their passions and strengths.
Our Approach
Our approach combines intellectual rigor with context and reflection. Students don't just absorb information—they learn to question it, connect it, and apply it to the challenges that matter to them and their communities. Lower School students engage in project-based learning, Socratic discussions, and experiential education that makes learning relevant and engaging.
"The Lower School creates a perfect bridge between elementary and high school—challenging enough to prepare students for rigorous academics, supportive enough to build confidence during early adolescence." — Middle School Director, Jennifer Martinez

Academic Program
The Lower School curriculum balances skill development with content exploration. Students master fundamental skills in reading, writing, and mathematics while exploring rich content in science, history, literature, and the arts. Small class sizes averaging 18 students enable personalized attention and differentiated instruction.
Advisory programs provide each student with a dedicated teacher-advisor who monitors academic progress, supports social-emotional development, and serves as the primary home-school contact. This structure ensures every student has an adult advocate who knows them well.
Beyond Academics
Students participate in our music and visual arts programs, developing creative expression and artistic skills. Athletics and physical education promote fitness, teamwork, and healthy habits. Service learning connects students with community needs and builds civic engagement.
Meridian serves 400 students in grades 6-12 at our Portland campus. We are a tuition-free public charter school open to all students through an equitable lottery system.
