Visual Arts: Seeing, Creating, Expressing

Education is more than instruction—it's orientation. At Meridian Charter School, we help students develop the clarity and confidence to navigate an increasingly complex world. Our visual arts program provides students in grades 6-12 with opportunities to develop artistic skills, explore diverse media, express ideas visually, and engage with art history and contemporary practice.

Program Overview

Our approach combines intellectual rigor with context and reflection. Students don't just absorb information—they learn to question it, connect it, and apply it to the challenges that matter to them and their communities. Visual arts education develops observation, creative problem-solving, visual literacy, technical skills, and personal expression.

Studio Spaces and Equipment

Art exhibition space
The Meridian Art Gallery provides professional exhibition space for student artwork.

Our art facilities include two dedicated studio spaces with natural light and professional-grade work surfaces, a ceramics studio with wheels, kilns, and glazing equipment, a darkroom for black-and-white film photography, and a digital lab with design software and large-format printing. The Meridian Art Gallery provides exhibition space for student work.

Materials and supplies are provided for coursework. Financial assistance ensures cost doesn't prevent participation in advanced courses or special projects. Our campus facilities support serious artistic development.

Exhibition Opportunities

Students exhibit work at the Meridian Art Gallery in rotating shows throughout the year, local coffee shops, community centers, and businesses through partnerships, regional and statewide high school art exhibitions and competitions, and end-of-year showcases featuring all student work. Opening receptions provide opportunities for students to discuss their work with audiences.

Many students have received Scholastic Art & Writing Awards recognizing excellence in visual arts. Some have sold work or received commissions, gaining early professional experience. Several graduates pursue art and design in college and careers.

Integration and Connections

Visual arts connect to academics through history and cultural context, science and color theory, mathematics and perspective/proportion, language arts and visual storytelling, and technology and digital creation. Projects often integrate multiple subjects, like historical research informing artistic interpretation.

Our educational philosophy recognizes that artistic thinking—observation, experimentation, revision, expression—develops capacities valuable across all disciplines. Students in middle and upper school can pursue art deeply while excelling academically.

Beyond Technique

While technical skill matters, our program emphasizes creative thinking, personal expression, visual literacy, and engagement with contemporary art. Students develop their own artistic voices, learn to critique work constructively, understand art's role in culture and society, and gain confidence in creative risk-taking.

Whether students pursue art professionally or as lifelong enthusiasts, the program develops ways of seeing, thinking, and expressing that enrich their lives. Learn about our music, athletics, and academic programs. Review our achievements, explore our mission, or start the admissions process.
