Upper School: Preparing for College and Beyond
Education is more than instruction—it's orientation. At Meridian Charter School, we help students develop the clarity and confidence to navigate an increasingly complex world. Our Upper School program serves students in grades 9-12, offering rigorous academics, diverse electives, college preparation, and opportunities for leadership and independent work that prepare students for success in college and meaningful lives beyond.
Rigorous Academic Program
Our approach combines intellectual rigor with context and reflection. Students don't just absorb information—they learn to question it, connect it, and apply it to the challenges that matter to them and their communities. Upper School students choose from a wide array of courses including Advanced Placement options, dual enrollment through Portland State University, and specialized electives.
"Meridian's Upper School prepared me exceptionally well for college. The emphasis on discussion, writing, and independent research meant I arrived at university already knowing how to think critically and manage my learning." — Alumni, Class of 2023

College Preparation and Counseling
Our college counseling program begins in 9th grade with four-year planning and intensifies in 11th and 12th grades with application support, essay guidance, financial aid assistance, and decision-making help. Our counselors know each student individually and provide personalized guidance matched to their interests, goals, and circumstances.
Recent graduates have attended colleges including Reed, Lewis & Clark, University of Oregon, Portland State, Whitman, Willamette, and schools nationwide. Our 97% college-going rate reflects strong preparation and effective counseling support.
Leadership and Independence
Upper School students take on leadership roles through student government, peer mentoring, club leadership, and athletic team captainships. Senior projects allow students to pursue independent research, creative work, or internships in areas of personal interest, culminating in public presentations of their learning.
Students develop self-direction through increasing academic independence, flexible scheduling options for upperclassmen, and opportunities to design their own learning experiences within appropriate structure and guidance.
Beyond Academics
Students engage deeply in music, visual arts, athletics, clubs, and community service. Our tradition of excellence recognizes achievement across all areas. The Distinguished Scholars program honors students combining academic excellence with meaningful service.
